Ph.D. A.A. Manukhin (senior researcher with ISKRAN, ILA RAS) and candidate of political sciences E.Yu. Kosevich (NS HSE) made a presentation ‘Modern Mexico: Features of Domestic and Foreign Policy’. Following their presentation, a discussion took place during which workshop participants discussed the first results of the government of Andrés Manuel Lopez Obrador, as well as the changing role of Mexico in international economic and political unions.

The discussion showed the closeness of the participants’ positions on a number of issues. The parties decided to continue the dialogue in autumn 2019.

During the seminar, the impact of the implementation of the policy of protectionism of the administration of D. Trump on the countries of Latin America, the prospects for integration processes in the Western Hemisphere and the participation of Latin American countries in projects for international economic cooperation were discussed.

When discussing the policy of the administration of D.Trump concerning Cuba, a complete departure from the process of establishing relations between the two countries initiated by the previous US administration was established, which was expressed in the introduction of new sanctions against Cuban commercial companies related to the security forces of Cuba.

In the course of the discussion on US sanctions against Venezuela, the joint position of most Latin American countries condemning the policy of Venezuelan President N. Maduro was noted.

On April 9-16, 2018, a scientific trip of the youth delegation of the Institute of the USA and Canada to the University of Maryland and the scientific centers of Washington took place.

The program of the visit to the University of Maryland included participation in seminars on various aspects of international security conducted by professors and professors of the University. Russian and American students and graduate students have jointly developed documents on two topical issues of contemporary international relations. The first Russian-American group presented a joint report containing recommendations on the settlement of the nuclear problem on the Korean peninsula. The result of the work of the second group was a joint report on possible measures to resolve problems related to the implementation of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

As part of the trip to Washington, the following scientific and expert centers were held: the Russian-American Business Cooperation Council, the Russian American Foundation, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Georgetown University, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, and the Hudson Institute. In addition, the delegation took part in a meeting with the staff of the newspaper The Washington Post and visited the Russian Embassy in the United States. A wide range of topics were discussed: the prospects for Russian-American relations, the future of the arms control regime, the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, in particular the nuclear issue of the Korean peninsula and the “nuclear deal” with Iran.
